Indonesia: Asia’s Next Heavyweight?

Indonesia’s decade-long rise to middle-income status, an attractive emerging market with enormous potential for investment growth is by now well known.

Stable, vibrant democratic politics, legitimate elections, and domestic peace and safety have been the underpinnings of Indonesia’s rise in recent yeas. A large middle class, dynamic free press, and very high consumer confidence now characterize Indonesia. However, an atmosphere of economic nationalism has taken hold in the run-up to the nation’s presidential election on July 9.

This presentation will provide an overview of Indonesia’s growth and potential, explain the outcome of the hotly contested presidential election, and outline the key risks and opportunities in Indonesia in coming years.

Douglas Ramage has more than 25 years’ experience in Indonesia. A leading expert on Indonesian politics, economics and business affairs, Doug provides advice and guidance to Fortune 500 companies in Indonesia. Fluent in Indonesian, Doug is a well-known
analyst, writer, frequent public speaker and media commentator on Indonesian affairs.

Doug is the Managing Director of BowerGroupAsia in Indonesia, a premier business and investment advisory firm. He is Governor of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Indonesia, as well as its Trade & Investment Committee Chair. Previously Doug served in in senior government and international organization positions in Indonesia – working at the World Bank, Australian Embassy, and The Asia Foundation.
