Speaker bio:
Professor John Reynolds’ interest in rehabilitation for neurological disease started during his time as a medical doctor, and prompted a change of career into neuroscience research.
His research focuses on understanding the natural patterns of brain cell activity in both the normal and disordered brain. The more he understood how the brain worked, the more he wanted to develop a mechanism for restoring normal brain activity in a more naturalistic way in both Parkinson’s disease and stroke.
Prof Reynolds leads two teams. The first is working on a novel treatment method for Parkinson’s disease that will replicate releasing medication directly to the brain in a way that mimics natural release. In 2016 he received a $4.8 million Ministry of Business Innovation and Enterprise (MBIE) funding for the “Targeting of Drug Delivery in the Brain”.
The second team has developed a novel stimulation method to improve recovery from stroke. They currently have this delivery system in clinical trials and are looking for eligible stroke candidates for treatment.
