The 2016 recipient of the NZ Institute of Architects Gold Medal, Roger Walker, will give a public lecture in Queenstown.
Roger was awarded the Gold Medal for an outstanding body of work over the course of a long and singular career. He was one of a generation of architects who came of age in the 60s and 70s in Wellington when the Capital was the site of New Zealand’s most vibrant architectural scene.
Roger’s architecture includes the Wellington Club on The Terrace, Park Mews by the Hataitai Tunnel, exuberant houses on Wellington’s hillsides, Whakatane Airport buildings, St Mary’s in Taumaranui, Centrepoint in Masterton and housing at Chateau Tongariro.
In acknowledging his significance, the NZIA praised “the wildly inventive architecture of a determinedly free spirit”.
